Photodynamic Acne Treatment

WHAT SKIN TYPE IS IT GOOD FOR:
Acne Prone Skin (Mild, Moderate, and Severe)

HOW IT’S PERFORMED:
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive acne treatment that employs blue LED light to activate a medication called 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). This therapy works by reducing acne through the shrinkage of sebaceous (oil-producing) glands, which decreases the amount of oil in each pore, as acne bacteria thrive on oil. Additionally, PDT directly targets the P. acnes bacteria on the skin's surface, which causes acne breakouts.

The treatment begins with the application of an ALA mask, which is allowed to incubate on the skin for up to 15 minutes. This incubation period is crucial, as it enables the photosensitizing agent (ALA) to be absorbed into the skin and sebaceous glands. After the incubation, remove
any excess product with a wet tissue or towel.Next, blue LED light is applied to the skin for approximately 20 minutes (using the Omega Light) or 10 minutes (with the Omega Dual). This light activates ALA, effectively killing acne bacteria and further reducing oil production.

PDT can successfully treat mild to moderate acne in as few as 4 to 8 sessions. Patients often experience improved overall skin texture after treatment, with a reduction in post-inflammatory erythema and hyperpigmentation—the red and brown marks that remain after active acne lesions have healed.
